My husband and I both grew up in Hobbs and we knew a little bit about this state park. Our parents would take us for a drive out here at Christmas when they had all of the lights and decorations. We’d go here to feed all the ducks on a nice day when we were kids. During college, we would come out here and walk around the golf course. But we never realized what a great camping spot this would turn out to be.

Harry McAdams State Park: Fees and Campsites

Harry McAdams State Park campground

This campground has about 15 campsites for both RVs and tents. Campsites are fully paved and have full hookups (30 amp electric). Some sites have covered picnic tables and fire rings. Nightly rates are around $18/night or $90/week. This is a no-reservation campground and there is a 14-day stay limit.

Campsites are well spaced out, have shade trees, and there is plenty of open space for the kids to play. This is a picture of our campsite where we are staying with a big open area just behind our RV.

For those that rely on cell/internet to work, we are having no trouble getting signal. Both AT&T and Verizon signals are strong.

Harry McAdams State Park: Campground Facilities

This campground has a comfort station with restrooms, but the doors are locked. If staying here, you’d most likely need to see the campground host to get the codes to get into the restrooms.

Harry McAdams State Park: Things To Do

There is quite a bit to do at this State Park. Just across the street from the campground is Rockwind Community Links golf course which is surrounded by a nice walking/biking trail. There’s a disc/frisbee golf area located in the green area just behind our campsite. There’s a pond with tons of ducks to feed. And for the kids, there’s football goal posts and a great playground near the area.

If you want to venture into town, there are a few things you could do.
Western Heritage Museum and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame is located near the New Mexico Junior College campus. The Zia Park Casino and Racetrack is just a couple minutes away if you want to do a little gambling. Or if the kids want to go for a swim, you can get a day pass at the CORE.

As far as shopping and restaurants, you have the basics: Walmart, Lowe’s, Home Depot, Chili’s, Starbucks, Applebee’s, Burger King, McDonald’s, and a few other local restaurants.

While Hobbs is just a small oil field town with few things to do, Harry McAdams State Park is a hidden gem that just may surprise you. It sure surprised these hometown folks!
