Base Camp Family Campground: Location
Base Camp Family Campground is located about 5 miles east of Alamosa, CO and about 20 miles west of Great Sand Dunes National Park on Hwy 160. It’s close to the highway but sits back far enough off of the road that traffic is not a disturbance. While the entire campground is on a nice flat area, there are beautiful mountain views all around.
Base Camp Family Campground: Fees and Campsites
This campground has 13 pull-through campsites that are 112′ in length. Campsites are on sand and gravel and have full hookups, picnic tables, and fire rings. Nightly rates range from $40-$45/night for a 2 person occupancy, and there is an additional charge of $3/night for children.
Overall this campground is very nice. It is wide open with little to no shade trees, but there are many small trees that seem to have been planted recently. Trash cans are lined and connected to a post at the back of each site. We have seen trash being collected regularly during our time here. Also at the back of each site is a post with campsite numbers and solar lights that make them easily seen when coming back to the campsite in the dark.
This is a picture of campsite #10 where we are staying, as well as the amazing views from all around our camper.
For those that rely on cell/internet to work, we are having no trouble getting signal. The campground has good wifi available and both AT&T and Verizon signals are strong.
Base Camp Family Campground: Bathhouse
Despite having full hookups, we wanted to use the bathhouse showers after our trip over to the Great Sand Dunes. There are 4 individual bathrooms in the bathhouse each with a toilet, sink, and shower stall. The bathrooms seem to be kept nice and clean, but there are tons of spiders.
I got past the spider issue and tried to get a shower started for one of the kids, but couldn’t get any hot water to come out. So I tried all of the other showers as well. Same result. I’m not sure if the hot water just happened to not be working that day, or if everyone else I saw going in there likes to take cold showers.
The bathhouse also has a laundry room inside. There is one washing machine that costs $1.50 per load, and one dryer that costs $1.00 per load. They only take quarters, but there is a change machine nearby if you only have dollar bills.
Base Camp Family Campground: Things To Do
There’s not much to do inside the campground itself. As I stated in the location section, you’re only minutes away from Great Sand Dunes National Park. Within 30 minutes of the area are many museums, a scenic railroad, hot springs, golf courses, and hiking trails.
We’ve had a nice time here at Base Camp Family Campground. We wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again when in the area.
